"He's crazy": the possible elimination of two public holidays provokes a reaction from Lyon's elected officials

Left-wing deputies and local elected officials in Lyon reacted strongly to François Bayrou's budget announcements on Tuesday evening.
On Tuesday, July 15, Prime Minister François Bayrou presented his initial savings plans for the 2026 budget. A Prévert-style inventory of tax measures and social spending cuts, welcomed by employers and criticized by unions. One measure in particular has caused a stir: the elimination of two public holidays, which François Bayrou predicts will be May 8 and Easter Monday.
" He's crazy ," wrote Valentin Lungenstrass, the Green deputy for mobility in the City of Lyon, in response to the choice of May 8, which the Prime Minister indicated today was not finalized. " Denying our history and the duty to remember in the face of Nazi barbarity in these times of the rise of the extreme right. So this is cancel culture? " he continued.
" Bayrou wants to cut workers' rest time. Including May 8, the day we celebrate the victory over Nazism. A symbol he is ready to erase. A sad admission of this government's moral decline, " writes Anaïs Belouassa Cherifi, LFI MP for Lyon. " Canceling May 8, blocking pensions, and breaking public services: this is not a budget; it's a slap in the face to those who keep this country standing, " considers Marie-Charlotte Garin, Green MP for Lyon.
" François Bayrou must stop picking the pockets of the French people, retirees, and low-income workers: if he were to persist in multiplying blind budget cuts to the detriment of the poorest without ever involving the richest, then he in turn would receive a slap in the face: that of censure ," declared Socialist Party MP Sandrine Runel in a press release.
